Your journey at a glance

About this safari

For travellers whose main interest is primates, this journey focuses on the volcanic highlands of southwestern Uganda and the forests around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The programme is built around two distinct guided experiences: a mountain-gorilla trek and a golden-monkey trek. Time around Kisoro and Lake Mutanda adds space to appreciate the region’s scenery and communities.

Mgahinga gorilla-permit availability is limited and depends on the trekking date. We will check the permit before confirming this itinerary; an alternative Bwindi gorilla route can be discussed if you prefer.

The route

Your day-by-day itinerary

This is a suggested route. We confirm the final order, lodges, permits and timings around your travel dates.

  1. DAY1

    Entebbe

    Arrival in Entebbe

Meet your driver at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Rest after your international flight and receive a briefing about the highland journey and trekking days.

  2. DAY2

    Entebbe · Kisoro

    Travel to the Kisoro highlands

Depart after breakfast for southwestern Uganda. The drive is a full travel day with planned breaks through the countryside and highlands. Arrive near Mgahinga and settle into your lodge.

  3. DAY3

    Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

    Mountain-gorilla trekking

Attend the morning park briefing before entering the forest with authorised trackers and guides to search for a habituated gorilla family. Trekking can be steep and physically demanding; the time in the forest depends on where the gorillas are located.

  4. DAY4

    Kisoro · Lake Mutanda

    Lake Mutanda and local experiences

Take a more relaxed day around Lake Mutanda. Depending on local operating arrangements, choose a canoe excursion, a scenic walk or a community experience hosted by local partners.

  5. DAY5

    Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

    Golden-monkey tracking

Return to the park for a guided golden-monkey tracking experience in the bamboo zone. Learn about the forest habitat and observe these lively primates while following the park rules.

  6. DAY6

    Kisoro

A free day in the Virunga foothills

Enjoy a flexible day for photography, rest or an optional guided activity suited to your interests and fitness. Your guide can help plan an appropriate local excursion.

  7. DAY7

    Kisoro · Entebbe

    Return to Entebbe

After breakfast, travel back to Entebbe by road. This is a long transfer, so we will confirm the timing against your departure flight and recommend an extra overnight stay where needed.
